لَوif هاجَstirred مِثلُthe like of الفَضلِexcellence خاطِرَthe mind of شاعِرٍa poet
أَلقَيتَyou laid بَينَbetween يَدَيthe hands of سِواكَsomeone other than you بَواكِريmy first fruits
Had the like of excellence stirred a poet's mind,
If the liking of merit had inspired a poet's mind like yours
You would have laid my first fruits before someone other than you.
I would have cast my first works before you
أَوor لَوif وَجَدَتthey found بِمِثلِwith the like of فَضلِكَyour excellence عاذِلاًa reproacher
كانَwould be الكَمالُperfection إِذاif سَلَوتُكَI forgot you عاذِريmy excuser
Or had they found a reproacher with excellence like yours,
Or if I had found with merit like yours a critic
Perfection would have excused me had I forgotten you.
Perfection would have been mine if I asked your pardon
لَكِنbut سَطَوتُI took command عَلىof القَريضِpoetry بِأَسرِهِin its entirety
وَغَدَوتُand I became أَعذَبَthe sweetest مَنهَلٍwellspring لِلخاطِرِfor the mind
Yet I took command of poetry in its entirety,
But I gained mastery over poetry in its entirety
And became the sweetest wellspring for the mind;
And became the sweetest spring for the mind
فَزَهَوتُso I shone بَينَamong مَدارِكٍperceptions وَمَشاهِدٍand sights
وَسَمَوتُand I rose بَينَamong بَصائِرٍinsights وَبَواصِرِand seeing eyes
So I shone among perceptions and sights,
So I triumphed among positions and sights
And rose among insights and discerning eyes.
And soared between visions and insights
أَوor كَيفَhow لاnot تَسموyou rise وَمِثلُكَand one like you مَنone who حَوىgathered

بِأَعَزِّin a most noble نَفسٍsoul كُلِّevery خَلقٍtrait باهِرِdazzling
Or how could you fail to rise, when one like you has gathered
Or how could I not soar when one like you contained
In a most noble soul every dazzling trait?
The noblest soul of all existent beings

A master of deeds, of a pen that has come
A flag above a deed above a pen that marched
To mock the cleaving sword in times of crisis;
In speeches mocking the piercing sword

And virtues that make all mouths speak
Throughout creation, with fragrant praise.
Of all humanity with fragrant praise

O master scholar among scholars, and sea that
The sign of scholars and the sea that
Does not, like other seas, reach an end.
Does not end like seas to the last
ياO أَيُّهاyou العِلمُknowledge الَّذيwhich أَوصافُهُits qualities

O knowledge, whose qualities
O knowledge whose descriptions
Have become gardens for creative minds and hearts.
Have become gardens of intuitions and consciences

Time has testified to us that you are its peerless one,
Time has testified for us that you are its unique one
Among humankind, nomad and townsman alike.
From every wind among people of past and present

O peerless one of the age, for whose
O unique one of the age for whom the best
Precedence in virtue the finest little fingers have curled.
Of successors competed in superior merit
لاno غَروَwonder أَنthat أُهديI offer إِلَيكَto you رَقائِقيmy delicate verses

No wonder that I offer you my delicate verses,
No wonder I dedicate to you my gentle poems
For I am a slave to virtues and noble deeds.
While I am gentle in merits and glories
لَيسَis not القَريضُpoetry سِوىother than تَأَثُّرُthe stirring of خاطِرٍa mind

Poetry is nothing but the stirring of a mind
Poetry is but the feeling of a moved mind
By what brings delight to a person's eye.
With which one's gaze finds comfort
تُمسيbecome المَحاسِنُbeauties وَهيَwhile they فيهِwithin it بِواعِثٌimpulses

لِلشِعرِfor poetry بَينَbetween مُسَبِّبٍan indirect cause وَمُباشِرِand a direct agent
Beauties become, within that mind, impulses
Beauties, while arousing in it, are reasons
For poetry, through causes both indirect and direct.
For poetry between causer and effector

Bright blazes upon the days—were it not for them,
Rarities across days without which
Time's faces would appear only scowling.
The faces of time would not shine but glower
لَمnot تُبرِحِcease to be الشُعَراءُthe poets صَرعىfelled by نَشوَةٍintoxication

Poets have remained felled by intoxication
Poets have not ceased victims of rapture
By their nectar, the bygone and the besieging alike.
By its nectar from ancient to recent
فَإِذاso when اِنجَلَتthey shine forth فيin مِثلِthe like of ذاتِكَyour person مَرَّةًonce

So whenever they shine forth in someone like you,
So if it coalesces in one like you once
I would pursue them with every grateful utterance.
I would match every utterance with gratitude

O you who, through favors and learning, have come
O you who with customs and knowledge
To put the depths of the brimming, surging sea to shame.
Laughs at the nonsense of the teeming riffraff

I offer you some agate from my poetic gift,
I gift you some of my heart's coral
O sea—but I do not call it my jewels.
O sea, but I do not say my jewels
أَبياتُverses of إِحسانٍgoodness وَلَيسَand not جَميعُهاall of them

Verses of goodwill, though not all of them
Verses of devotion not all of which
Are verses filled with beauties.
Are filled with beauties from each verse
قَدindeed جادَهاwatered them صَوبَthe showers of الصِباyouth وَبِنَشرِهاand through their perfume

Youth's showers have watered them, and through their perfume
He flowed them towards youth, and by disseminating them
The east wind has disclosed every wafting scent.
Youth slept from every customary bond

They grew alongside me through the stages of a life that joined
I went through stages of an intimate life
What surged forth by day to a sleepless night.
That knew no day or night of wakefulness
قَدindeed باكَرَتنيcame early to me قَبلَbefore صادِقِthe true فَجرِهِdawn of it

They came to me early, before that life's true dawn,
It surprised me before the truthful dawn
Since I was in the tenth of its years.
Since I was ten years old
أَوinspired (first fragment) حَت(continuation of inspired) إِلىto قَلبيmy heart الهَوىlove فَشَعَرتُso I felt إِذwhen

They inspired love in my heart, and I felt it when
Or until passion crept into my heart when
The branch of yearning would not yield to one who would bend it.
The branch of youth bends not towards a plucker
فَمَضَيتُso I went on بَينَamong كَمائِلٍperfections وَمَفاخِرٍand glories
وَمَشَيتُand I walked بَينَamong خَمائِلٍthickets وَأَزاهِرِand blossoms
So I went on among perfections and glories,
So I went on between perfections and glories
And walked among thickets and blossoms.
And walked between beauties and flowers

I did not say this boastfully or conceitedly, nor
I spoke this neither boasting nor marveling and there is not
Am I self-admiring or boastful in their composition.
Among its composers one boastful or proud
لَكِنbut لَتَرفَقَso you treat gently غَيرَnot مَأَمورٍcommanded بِهاwith them

But so you may treat them gently, not at my command;
But so it may treat gently one not commanded by it
For how many stages they have crossed to reach their present state!
For you it marched a stretch to gain the present

I steadied them after struggle; how often they mimicked
I enabled it after strife, and how often it described
The trembling of lot-arrows in a gambler's two hands.
The shaking of lances that appeared in my hands dexterous
حَتّىuntil أَتَتthey came مِنfrom بَعدِafter تَربِيَتيmy nurturing لَهاof them

Until, after I had nurtured them, they became
Until after my cultivation of it, it came to have
Enough for me, though they did not fill my eyes.
Enough for me that it did not fill my grasp

I made up for the beauty I had lost by their
I compensated what beauty I lost with what
Being raised to you; thus I was no loser.
Was raised to you, so I was no loser
فَكُنِso be الوَصِيَّthe guardian عَلىover يَتامىthe orphans of ناظِمٍa versifier

So be the guardian of a versifier's orphans,
So be the guardian over the orphans of a composer
And daughters of thought that fall short in your praise.
And daughters of thought in your embrace still young

Not for their worthiness did I offer them; how often
I gifted them not so they may suit, and often
A great man has accepted a gift from a humble one.
The great accepts a gift from the small

They fall below what is offered to you; yet
They are beneath what is gifted you, but one like me
One like me is incapable of anything finer.
Is not able beyond the superior
