1. سائلي عنهُ وعن سيرَتِهِ

    جِسمُ إنسانٍ به روحُ نَمِر

    You who ask me about him and his conduct:

    A human body with a leopard's spirit within.

  2. وعلى الشرِّ وجَلبِ الشَرِّ والس

    سَعي في الإيجادِ للشَّرِّ فُطِر

    And for evil, for bringing evil, and for the

    pursuit of creating evil, he was fashioned.

  3. ماله والخيرُ إن خيرٌ بَدا

    وإذا ما لاحَ شَرٌّ يَبَدِر

    What has he to do with goodness, if goodness appears?

    And whenever evil appears, he rushes forward.

  4. ناكثُ العهدِ خَئونٌ غادِرٌ

    فاجرُ الأيمانِ أفَّاكٌ أشِر

    A breaker of pledges, faithless and treacherous.

    False in his oaths, an inveterate liar, insolent.

  5. وشقيقٌ له إن يغدر بهِ

    فَحَرِىٌّ بِسواهُ إن غُدِر

    And if he betrays even a brother of his,

    Then another is all the more likely to be betrayed.

  6. سَمعُ سِمع له إن شَرٌّ بَدا

    وله سَمعٌ عنِ الخَيرِ وَقَر

    He has a simʿ's hearing if evil appears,

    And his hearing is deaf to goodness.

  7. ولهُ في الفَضلِ رجلا مُقعَدٍ

    وهو في اللُّؤمِ سُلَيكٌ إن يَسِر

    And in virtue he has the legs of one who cannot walk,

    Yet in baseness he is Sulayk when he moves.
