Without diligence, there can be no learning.

Yes, this saying of his is true and accepted.

But why do I see him trying

To impose on us, by God, what is not required?

Must a young man remain throughout his life

Bent over acquiring knowledge, until he dies?

If his aim is to reach an endpoint

And a limit to knowledge—how mistaken his notion is!

Knowledge has no bounds; so pluck what

Lies near among its ripe fruit; if you wish, you will gain.

And acquire much of it—and that is the aim—in

A little of your time, if you understand.

And hasten to benefit the country, my brother, with what

You have read; and this is something binding upon you.

But if you spend your lifetime seeking

Knowledge, then this learning has done you no good.

And you do not know when you—who can tell?—

Will be struck dead by arrows from the bow of death.

For, in giving back what you have taken,

You are duty-bound; otherwise you would be concealing knowledge.

The outcome of knowledge for a young man is to benefit himself

And others; otherwise ignorance is safer.
