بما أجيبُ عن ثناءٍ عاطر
منfrom خيرِthe finest كاتبٍwriter وخيرand the finest شاعرpoet
من خيرِ كاتبٍ وخير شاعر
With what shall I answer fragrant praise
from the finest writer and the finest poet—
كالسِّحرlike magic بلrather دونهbeneath it سِحرُthe magic الساحِرof the sorcerer
كالسِّحر بل دونه سِحرُ الساحِر
يَرسُبُit sinks فيinto قرارةِthe depths الأحشاءِof the inward parts
يَرسُبُ في قرارةِ الأحشاءِ
like magic, yet a sorcerer's magic falls short of it—
that sinks into the very depths of the heart?
اللهGod يشهدbears witness بأنِّيthat I عاجزam unable
الله يشهد بأنِّي عاجز
وليسand not يَقويis able شاعرٌa poet أوor راحِزa versifier (likely intended)
وليس يَقوي شاعرٌ أو راحِز
God bears witness that I am helpless,
and no poet or versifier is able
عنto ردِّoffering شُكريmy thanks غيرَexcept أنيِّthat I رامِزam alluding
عن ردِّ شُكري غيرَ أنيِّ رامِز
إلىto وَفائيmy faithfulness لأبيto Abu الوَفََاءal-Wafa
إلى وَفائي لأبي الوَفََاء
to express my thanks; I can only allude
to my faithfulness to Abu al-Wafa.
