Who would have imagined, O Egypt, that

Al-Aqqad would be unjustly imprisoned on your soil?

O Land of the Quiver, arena of lions—never

would those lions lapse into torpor.

And if Sidqi has assailed Al-Aqqad, sometimes

    adversaries assail their adversaries.

They nominated Sidqi, as though their aim

were to behold him; in him that aim has failed.

Abbas has not been imprisoned: no man is imprisoned

who has kingdoms and lands within people's hearts.

Musk's fragrance grows sweeter when Abbas's name is spoken,

and it may grow stronger as he grows.

Abbas, do not grieve: no man grieves

for whom mothers and children have wept.

Art and sound literature have wept for you,

and its learning; ḍād, the Arabic tongue, has wept for you.

And a poet among the readers of your enchantment has wept for you

with his reed pen, whose tears are ink.

They let their hatreds judge; thus there appeared to us

those hatreds, their colors laid bare.

    والله ما هذا النَّكادُ نَكَادُ

    They imprisoned you to vex your party among them;

by God, this vexation is no vexation.

And beneath Egypt's sky none holds sway

but the pharaohs who have already perished.

O reed pen of Al-Aqqad, sing! Only

in the cage does the melodious bird sing.

O Egypt of the Zaghluls (young pigeons), be patient, and beware lest

you perish if ever a heart of yours—Fuad—falls ill.
