When a cultured young man is mentioned,

Then who is like Muhammad, a learned luminary?

And if talk turns to governors,

Then who is like Muhammad, a wise arbiter?

But there is nothing unprecedented in all this,

And in him is that which has bewildered minds.

For you are the son of al-Tihami, a source of pride

To lofty eminence and true glory.

And indeed the lion cub inherits a lion's secret,

From him comes a straight path, like his own.

So you were the full moon, sprung from a sun that rose high

On glory's horizon; the moon's light is everlasting.

    وللعُظَما الأَعادي والخًُصومُ

    And may God spare you from enemies;

For the great have enemies and adversaries.

And whoever is strong will have an enemy,

And an accursed devil breathes into him.

And who among mankind is seen as an enemy

To him, except a scoundrel or a baseborn man?

We lodged in his courtyard of lofty eminence,

So, as we lodged, bliss came to dwell with us.

But we were grieved by parting,

For our parting from him is painful.

Our Muhammad is generous in a land

Where a generous man is rarer than rare.

And the gentleness of his nature and his fine character—

Through this, his companion and boon companion come alive.

    أتَتهُ وغيرُه له لا تَقومُ

    To the pride of youth I lead a virgin bride;

She has come to him, and rises for no other.
