Welcome, wound—would that it might recur!

For I cannot wait for your gathering to recur.

The wound that had appeared in my head had not healed

Before you left the wound in my heart dripping.

If my loved ones gather, O wound,

Then heal or not, for you are free to choose.

O my loved ones, pardon me if, when it comes to

Thanking you for your affection, I fall short.

Through sincere affection have melted your affec-

tions; sincerity has a secret that shines forth.

With affection, as one bends a branch, you bent

My side, until I thought it would break.

That one strings verse from the necklaces of his eloquence,

And another scatters pearls of rhetoric.

    أوَ ما بِكُم هذي المَعاني أبُصِرُ

    From you I have added eyes above my own eye;

And do I not see these meanings through you?

By God, what a gathering, harmonious in form,

Like a garden, yet bearing the fruit of knowledge!

And if I am unable to describe its beauty,

Pardon me, for people like you forgive someone like me.
