We may see him sitting, huddled up,

like a criminal who takes fright whenever he sees anything.

Then, whenever evil appears before him, he yawns

    at once, stretches, and sighs.

He widens the circle of evil, even if

he neither brings it into being nor bursts forth.

You will not see him, when evil appears before him,

    thinking about food or drink.

His soul has darkened with sin, so even if

the light of guidance dwelt within it, it would not shine.

What a dog he is, devoted to evil! And I know

a dog to growl out of malice.

He has a putrid conscience; there is no hope

    of his reform—like rotten eggs.
