أُودِّعُI bid farewell فيin صبَاحthe morning غدٍof tomorrow حَبِيباa beloved
وهلand is غَيرابنِanyone but the son of دَاوودٍDawud حَبِيبُa beloved
Tomorrow morning I bid farewell to a beloved;
And is anyone but Ibn Dawud beloved?
قتًىa youth لِيfor me العيشُlife طابَwas sweet بهthrough him زَماناfor a time
فكيفَso how بِدُونهwithout him عَيشِيmy life يَطيبُbecomes sweet
A youth through whom life was sweet to me for a time—
So how can my life be sweet without him?
فقلبِيfor my heart بَعدَهُafter him شيئاa little فَشَيئاًthen a little more
يَذوبنُmelts وكيفَand how قلبِيmy heart لاnot يذُوبُmelt
For after him my heart, little by little,
Melts—and how could my heart not melt?
أُودِّعُكمI bid you farewell سَكيبَstreaming الطرفِthe eye دَمعاwith tears
وماذاand what ينفعُavails الدَّمعُthe tears السَّكِيبُstreaming
I bid you farewell with tears streaming from my eyes;
And what use are streaming tears?
أتَذكُرُdo you remember ياO ابنَson of داوُودٍDawud وُقُوتاtimes
بقَلبِيin my heart لاnot يزالُceases لهاof them دَبيبُa gentle stirring
Do you remember, O Ibn Dawud, times
Whose stir still lingers in my heart,
جَنَينَاwe plucked مِنfrom قُطوفِthe fruits الأُنسِof companionship فيهَاduring them
سَوايعbrief hours أمرُهَاtheir nature أمرٌa matter عَجيبُwondrous
When we plucked from the fruits of companionship
Brief hours of a wondrous kind—
فَمِنso from رَاحٍwine بهاthrough it طَابَتbecame delightful سُقَاةٌcupbearers
ومِنand from سَاقٍa cupbearer بهthrough him راحٌwine تَطِيبُbecomes delightful
From wine that made cupbearers a delight,
And from a cupbearer who makes wine a delight?
