لَئِنif indeed فَتكَتstruck fatally سودُthe black ones العُيونِof the eyes بِمُهجَتِيat my heart
لَئِن فَتكَت سودُ العُيونِ بِمُهجَتِي
فكَمthen how often أورَدَتنِيhave brought me زُرقُهَاtheir blue ones مَوردَthe place of الهَلكِdestruction
فكَم أورَدَتنِي زُرقُهَا مَوردَ الهَلكِ
Though black eyes have dealt my heart a deadly blow,
If the blacks of eyes have slain me with love
how often their blue ones have led me to destruction!
How many times have their blues led me to doom
وكمand how often لصُنُوفof varieties of الرَّاحwine رُحتُI became مَعَاقِراa habitual drinker
وكم لصُنُوف الرَّاح رُحتُ مَعَاقِرا
ومَاand not أَذهبَتtook away نُسكِيmy piety سوَىexcept خمرَةَthe liquor of الوِسكَىwhisky
ومَا أَذهبَت نُسكِي سوَى خمرَةَ الوِسكَى
And how often have I been a drinker of many kinds of wine,
And how oft have I partaken freely of the zephyrs
yet nothing has taken away my piety except whisky.
Naught but the wine of love takes my devotion away
