There is no hero on earth like al-Tihami—

A testimony issued by the greatest of nations.

This is France, and this the medal of her honor,

And you—you are without peer or equal.

And this is France's chief, come to celebrate.

How great the honoree and the celebrant!

Medals have kissed your beloved breast,

Of many kinds, savoring the sweetness of kissing and kisses.

Then the war medal grew jealous of them out of passion,

Saying, “Why have I not attained this honor?”

So it came racing ahead, burning with longing,

Embracing the breast in overwhelming delight.

And how could it not, when all the qualities of glory

Are apportioned in you between word and deed?

And every language has echoed your praise,

And your name has spread among people like a proverb.

You are the one who, when he appears to people smiling,

Gives life with his countenance, like a cloud pouring rain.

And when he appears angry, the heart is in dread,

And the gaze is bewildered, and the body paralyzed.

The towering Atlas has bowed its peaks,

That had made demands for centuries, yet did not tower when you came.

Do you not see it when

Your voice rings between the lower slope and the summits?

Never has it approached rebels in their rebellion

Without scattering them across plain and mountain.

O you whose rank has soared in glory's sky,

And whose mention on people's lips has become like honey,

This is glory, and this is glory's utmost goal:

A mighty glory that flowed in primordial eternity.

So we ask God to keep you amid blessings,

Walking proudly, through His bounty, in jewels and robes.

And take her, a beauty of exquisite verse,

Long-lashed, her cheek reddening with shyness.

Poetry is what the soul hears, drawing new life

From it and becoming through it like an intoxicated drinker.

And poetry is what has sounded sweet in its listener's ear,

Then he asks to hear it again, unafraid of boredom.

If this is so, then poetry is nonexistent,

And does not come unless it comes from me,

Especially in praise of you, as I hope

For your acceptance of it, O finest of recipients.
