وهيand it لِقلبيto my heart أشارَتsignaled
The orb of my eye gazed,
My languid eyes glanced
And it signaled to my heart,
And to my heart they hinted
فيat وجهِthe face of مَنthe one whom أُحِبُّهُI love him
إذاwhen السَّماءُthe sky انفَطَرَتsplits apart
At the face of the one I love:
At the face of my beloved
When the sky splits apart.
If the sky was torn asunder
وأدمُعيand my tears منfor أجلِهِhis sake
إذاwhen البِحارُthe seas فُجَّرَتare made to burst forth
And my tears, for his sake—
And my tears for his sake
When the seas burst forth.
If the seas burst forth
ومُهجَتيand my heart's blood منfrom هَجرِهِhis desertion
إذاwhen الجَحيمُHell سُعِّرَتis set ablaze
And my heart's blood, from his desertion—
And my love from his estrangement
When Hell is set ablaze.
If hell was set ablaze
وخاطِريand my mind منfrom حُبِّهِlove of him
إذاwhen النُّجومُthe stars انكَدَرَتfall and scatter
And my mind, from love of him—
And my thoughts of his love
When the stars fall and scatter.
If the stars were in turmoil

إذاwhen الجِبالُthe mountains سُيِّرَتare set in motion
A gazelle, as though his mind—
Like a gazelle whose mind
When the mountains are set in motion.
If mountains were set in motion
قلتُI said لهto him متَىwhen اللِّقاthe meeting
وأدمُعيand my tears تَحَدَّرتstreamed down
I said to him, "When shall we meet?"
I asked when is our union
While my tears streamed down.
And my tears streamed down

إذاwhen القُبورُthe graves بُعثِرَتare overturned
He answered me with his words:
He answered me saying
"When the graves are overturned."
When graves are scattered
