Spare me, you two, the mention of illness—spare me.
He called me from the remembrance of sickness, he called me
And come, give me a clear cup of joy to drink.
And bring me a cup of pure joy to drink

And repeat to my hearing his songs of intimacy
Their third strings in their melody, and the second strings.
With rhythms in threes and eights

For these brief moments of joy have returned,
So these are the times of joy that have passed
And the brief moments of joy remain forever as they are.
And often the times of joy as they were

Yes, the dark of the moon veiled the full moon for a moment,
Yes, the full moon covered the crescent in shyness
And here he is, the moon in its fullness, appearing radiant.
And here is the full moon of completion shining brightly

And the heart of East and West did not tremble,
And the heart of the two was not beating
Save for a moment, after which it grew calm.
Except for a moment after which it became calm

The eye of glory, generosity, and eminence grew wet,
The eye of glory, generosity and highness was tested
And no sooner was it wet than it began to laugh aloud.
And it was not tested until it started laughing out loud

And our hearts grew sorrowful only so
And our hearts were not saddened except so
That joy might follow sorrow.
That joy becomes following sadness

And if our faces frowned, it was only
So that the light of gladness might appear upon them.
So the light of joy appears clearly

A sorrowful person's sigh, and the echo of a sigh,
The sigh of a grieving one and the return of a sigh
With overwhelming joy, came plunging back into the heart.
With excessive joy returned in the heart collapsing

It is no wonder that a humble servant granted dominion
And it is not strange that devoted servants
Should be remembered by his Lord, the Lord of lords.
Remember their Master, Master of the loyal ones

By his nature, He is of righteous compassion, comforting

And to God belong the hidden things of this world.
And for God in this existence, hidden things

Their urban and rural contingents from the Maghrib.

A heart of theirs urged them on, becoming their camel-driver.
With a heart that became their guide

Above the stars, rising while He is settled in the heart

And from a breeze that blew, the gentlest surroundings

And were it not for Him, I would have abandoned poetry and returned
To composing it, save to complain of my times.
To speak it only complaining of my time

Alas stupidity for the ignorant and misguidance
Upon their efforts: they hope to see me parted from him.
For their efforts, hoping to distance me from him

They do, by God I have not known it since I was conscious

Then how did it harm them if I was content with poverty

For Your blessings, this is beyond my contentment with my state
