On parting day, we were given a draught—

how bitter its taste and flavor!

I had hoped, after longing and lovesickness,

that our gathering and reunion would endure,

when God had blessed us with meeting,

and a burning heart of ours found healing.

And I saw glory at the summit of greatness,

and saw honor with its canopy unfurled.

My soul found healing in your virtues,

which rivaled freshly opened musk in fragrance.

    So peace upon your vizier,

who possessed all that was refined and pleasing in character,

and upon the retinue gathered around you—

witty in speech and tightly girded.

Not upon certain faces, which were never

created, by God, except to be spat upon.

In merit, theirs are a cripple's two legs,

but in the arena of baseness they race ahead.

It does not harm the full moon that

among its days are days of moonless darkness.

O God, how those [brief hours] passed—

like someone who closed his eyelids and awoke.

    وجَرَى ذاكَ على غَيرِ اتِّفَاق

    And hear what befell me after I left you;

    it happened without prior arrangement.

I found the full moon waiting for me—

if only you had seen us kissing and embracing!

And just as God had blessed us with

our meeting, He also hastened our parting.

And we mounted a motorcar's back,

for which al-Buraq had offered his two wings.

It took us where we wished and anchored,

and we entered, swaying gently and pressed together.

    We remained in ever-increasing closeness,

and between us, leg entwined with leg.

Ah, how short a night it was—

like someone who closed his eyes and awoke.

And as we wished, and as passion willed,

we came together after longing and yearning.

Then I plucked the roses from his cheek,

and kissed his mouth, honey-sweet in taste.

I said, "O full moon, will you leave me?"

He said, "The sun and full moon do not meet."

I said, "Do you know what I seek?"

He said, "Do you know that time has grown short?"

Then he donned a bluish suit—

who has seen the sky's full moon dressed in blue?

Then he cast me aside and turned to flee,

and I followed him without catching up.

I clung to him for fear of separation,

while springs of tears gushed from me.

Ah, how sweet the brief moments of contentment,

and how bitter parting after reunion!

This is the world, and this is its way:

the world is only meeting and parting.
