Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

A beloved greeted me with her,

    refined and cultured.

By God, could it be sweet

for me to part from my delight?

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

    O flower whom I love,

glory to Him who fashioned her!

Not even musk rivals her fragrance,

and her hue is the hue of a pearl.

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

    Her fragrance wafts,

    so the crowds grow intoxicated,

    and tears fall

in a heat like that of a glowing ember.

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

She has parted from her mother,

who used to keep her family together

    and savor being with her

in the morning and at evening.

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

If her sorrow had been nothing

    but parting from her mother,

she would have been pitied for losing

    a delight like companionship.

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

And she parted from her branch,

    and brothers of her age,

    and from her secure refuge—

a father and a family home.

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

She has a tress of hair,

    from above her shoulders,

    draped over her

like the falling of a veil.

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

She shows you a nest of pearls:

    breast beside breast,

    gathered together in a nest,

    like a family assembled.

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

Have you glimpsed, my dear friend,

a full moon among the stars,

    with clouds around it,

    delicate and green-tinged?

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

A friend greeted me with her,

    whose character yearns

    for her far-spreading fragrance

and the stars of the Milky Way.

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

    When a second friend appeared,

I greeted him; he greeted me,

    and our eyes met,

together, in a glance between us.

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

Then he saw in my palm

    her, all beauty and charm,

as I raised her to my eye,

    heaving my sigh upward.

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

He took her and smelled her,

and after that clasped her close,

    دعها بِقَصدِ العِبرَة

    and said, “This is the oryxes’ perfume;

    leave her as a lesson.”

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

    وقامةً مثلُ الأسَل

    I saw a languid glance

    and a figure like a reed;

so do not ask about my sorrows

or the depth of my bewilderment.

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

So I said, “Take her, my lord,

    and I am keeping watch

until I see her in my hand,

so that my flower is not lost.”

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

    Had I honored her covenant,

I would not have accepted her absence,

    exchanging what she held

    of love for estrangement.

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

    But man is

    treacherous by nature,

and those before him likewise were

    betrayers of their pledged trust.

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

My heart spends the night in dejection,

and the tears of my eye pour forth,

and sound judgment has left me,

and the echo of my sigh lingers long.

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

    O flower that was gifted,

    nay, a blessing bestowed,

behold, my eye has grown dim

from the long shedding of my tears.

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.

Oh, if only I knew: shall I see

    something bought for her

with all that lies upon the earth

    of wealth and abundance?

Oh, my sorrow! Oh, my sorrow!

Over the loss of my flower.
