O house, you have gained glory and honor,

and your standing among houses has become great.

You once were the house of a man in power,

who knew neither what was lawful nor what was forbidden.

He robbed souls of their possessions and their lives,

and subjected them to torture and pain,

    until God granted you happiness,

when you came to belong to fortunate Ibrahim.

And he gave your face radiance, though for so long

it had been disfigured by vile injustice.

In place of that oppressor, you were given a devout guardian,

    devoted to noble deeds, generous,

    free, versed in affairs, refined,

    cultured, broad-browed, perceptive.

God bestowed on him a luminous heart,

free from every malady of the heart.

Noble-hearted, he has an ample share of learning,

which brought prose and verse within his reach,

and won him affection among men,

so you see him a close friend of noble people.

O house, may you delight in what you have gained of

glory and good fortune, ever abiding.

And you were granted cleansing of the oppressor's traces

when God settled a wise man within you.

And after decay you became new,

and after privation you were granted bliss.

He spoke truly who said that fortune is not

    necessarily bestowed in both states.

A young man becomes the richest of mankind, though many a time

he spent the night destitute, his purse shaken empty.

And among the robes of beauty, you were clothed in a robe

radiant, which left the envious one wounded.

And youth returned to you with gentle caresses,

and harsh old age departed, humbled.

And to you, Ibrahim, congratulations, just as

morning sent a breeze from the gardens.
