O gazelle whose shadow I kept following,

Until I won her and my days grew generous.

    لكنهُ مِن شِيمَةِ الغِزلانِ

    She fled, but her flight was not coldness;

Rather, it is in the nature of gazelles.

Who will bring her to me, if her cheeks are tinged

Rose-red with the crimson hue of modesty,

Or she approaches, swaying, and her figure

Puts a ban-tree's bough to shame with its supple bending,

Or if she gazes with her eyelids—she whose

    Eyelids are filled with allure?

I have never forgotten her as she tried

To reveal her love to me in clear words.

Then her words stumbled on her tongue,

So her eyes completed what she meant to say.

Do not reproach me when I am lost in love for her,

For the love she inspires holds my reins.

And I am he who will not turn away from loving her,

And I am he who is wholly consumed in love for her.
