    Nightingales carved from marble.

    Ah, may God confound whoever carved them!

    He has indeed depicted mockery in their beauty,

    And established for art what we have established.

    So their forms dazzled with beauty,

    And no young man matched them in beauty,

    فأزرَى بهَا شبهُهَا إذ أتَى

    Until their counterpart appeared in splendor;

    Then their counterpart put them to shame when he came.

    So some of them have their heads bowed in shame,

    And some thought of slipping away,

    And some are turning away from him,

    And some turned toward him.

    كذا الدهرُ يقهرُ من قَد عَتا

    Before this, they had grown arrogant because of their beauty;

    Thus Time overpowers whoever has grown arrogant.
