دَعُونيLeave me فإنيfor indeed I لاnot أُطيقُI can bear التَّكَلُّماspeaking
وقَلبيand my heart لاnot يَزدادُgrows إلاexcept تَألُّماin pain
Leave me, for I cannot bear to speak,
Leave me be, for I cannot bear to speak,
And my heart only grows more pained.
And my heart only grows more pained.
تنعَّمتُI found delight فيin رَبعٍan abode بديعٍwondrous مَناظراًviews
وماand not تَمَّمَcompleted المولىthe Lord إلىَّfor me التَّنَعُّماthe enjoyment
I found delight in an abode with wondrous views,
I enjoyed the fair views of a lovely place,
Yet the Lord did not make my delight complete.
Yet the Lord did not allow me to fully delight.
فقدfor indeed غابَhas gone مَنthe one whom نَهوَىwe love وأضرمَand kindled لوعتيmy anguish
وزادَand grew بذِكراهُthrough remembrance of him الوُلُوعُpassion تَضَرُّماin burning
For the one we love has gone, kindling my anguish,
For she I loved has gone and lit my passion aflame,
And passion burned more fiercely with remembrance of him.
And thoughts of her only stoke the burning embers.
وَخَلًَّفَنيand left me behind صَبًّاlove-stricken فريداًalone مُتَيَّماًenslaved by love
رضيتُI was content بكونيwith my being مُفرَداًalone ومُتَيَّمَاand enslaved by love
And he left me love-stricken, alone, enthralled;
She left me a unique, lonely lover,
I was content to be alone and enslaved by love.
And I was content to be singular and lonesome.
فماso what حيلَتيmy remedy والقلبُand the heart ليسَis not بِواجِدٍable to find
عليهِover him اصطِباراًpatience حينwhen بانَhe departed وأقسماand swore an oath
What remedy have I, when my heart cannot find
What can I do when my heart is not inclined
Patience in his absence, when he departed and swore an oath?
To show patience now that she is gone and sworn off?
فكلُّfor all رُبوعٍabodes لاnot تَرَىyou see مَنsomeone تَشَابِهاًakin to you (unclear form)
تَصيرُbecome ولوand even if كانتwere نعيماًbliss جَهَنَّماHell
For every abode where you see no one akin to you
For any place where you see no resemblance
Becomes Hell, even if it were bliss.
Becomes Hell though it be Paradise.
فلستَfor you do not ترىsee إلاexcept وجوهاًfaces عَوابساًscowling
ولستَand you do not ترىsee وجهاًa face بهاin it مَُبسِماsmiling
For you see nothing but scowling faces,
You see only gloomy faces,
And there you see no smiling face.
And never a face smiling.
أُناسٌpeople فأماand as for البخلُmiserliness فهوthen it is حياتُهمtheir life
وَيقضيand perishes الذيthe one who منهمamong them يَرومُseeks تَكرُّماgenerosity
A people whose very life is miserliness,
People whose very life is stinginess,
And whoever among them seeks generosity perishes.
And the best of them aspires but to generosity.
فماfor not العيشُlife فيin تزنيتَTiznit إلاexcept مناظرٌscenery
ترىyou see فيin مَناحيهاits quarters السُّرورَjoy مُخَيِّماencamped
For life in Tiznit is nothing but scenery;
Life in Taznit is only scenic views
You see joy encamped in its quarters.
Where you see happiness camped in its valleys,
ويخلُبُand captivates لبَّthe mind المرءِa person سحرُthe magic جَمالهاits beauty

وتُنطِقُand gives speech to منfrom فرطِthe excess of المَسَرّةِdelight أبكَماa mute person
And the magic of its beauty captivates a person's mind,
The charm of its beauty captivates one's heart,
And makes a mute person speak from sheer delight.
And it makes even the mute speak from sheer delight.
فظاهِرُهاfor its exterior فيهin it نعيمٌbliss ورحمةٌand mercy
وباطنُهاand its interior فيهin it العذابُtorment مُضَخَّماmagnified
For its outward face holds bliss and mercy,
Outwardly it is bliss and mercy,
And within it, torment is magnified.
Yet inwardly the torment is exaggerated.
تُسلِّمُyou greet إنif تَمرُرyou pass بهمby them مُتَأَدِّباًcourteously
وقلَّand rare is الذيthe one who منهمamong them إذاwhen مَرَّhe passes سَلَّماhe greets
You greet them courteously when you pass,
They greet you courteously if you pass mannerly,
Yet few of them offer greetings as they pass.
Yet few greet if they are the ones passing by.

I spent an age there, its taste a mingling
I spent an age there with bittersweet days
Of honey and colocynth, from union and separation.
Of company and loneliness, joy and sorrow.

وماand not أسَفيmy grief يًجديavails لِطبعٍfor a disposition تَحَكَّماhas taken control
I grieved over the morals of some of its people,
I lamented the character of some of its people,
Yet my grief avails nothing against a disposition that rules supreme.
Yet my lament did nothing to temper their nature.
وكانand was لسانُthe voice of الحالِthe state of affairs منهاfrom it مُخاطِبيaddressing me
عمbe well صباحاًin the morning ياO غريبُstranger وأَنعِماand live at ease
And its unspoken voice addressed me:
The state of affairs there said to me:
Hail, good morning, stranger, and live at ease!
"Good morning, stranger, and enjoy yourself!"
قضَيتُI spent سِنيناًyears بينamong ظَهرانِthe midst of جِيرتِيmy neighbors

I spent years among my neighbors,
I spent years among my neighbors
Yet among them you found no one devoted to good manners.
Yet found none who aspired to manners.
ولمand did not تلقَyou find إلاexcept أرعناًa fool وابنَand the son of أرعنٍa fool

And you found only a fool and a fool's son;
I found only vulgarity and sons of vulgarity,
You see baseness, utter baseness, embodied in him.
You see every kind of boorishness embodied in them.
لِذاكَfor that reason تَرانيyou see me بينَbetween حينٍone time وآخرٍand another
أزُفُّI bring إليكَto you السِّحرَenchantment لَحظاًa glance ومَبسِماand a smiling mouth
That is why you see me, from time to time,
Thus you find me, from time to time,
Bringing you enchantment in a glance and a smiling mouth,
Blowing you a kiss at dawn, with a smile.

From graceful maidens—either her mouth, fashioned from bubbles,
Be they from the wine-skins or the aged wine itself,
Or her lips' dark hue, from aged wine.
Her lips are buzzing, drunk.

Slender—in her gown a bough sways,
The branches droop languidly on her dress,
And the garden has blossomed in her cheek and smiling mouth.
And the garden has bloomed, cheek and smile.

So how welcome she is to an eye made sore by their faces!
So she delighted him with a glance that smote their faces.
For one like you truly delights in beauty.
For one like you is truly entitled to delight.

And I ask the Lord of the Throne—ask with me—that
I beseech the Lord of the Throne, and I ask Him with me
He cleanse me of them, as a shirt is cleansed—for perhaps...
To cleanse me of them, perhaps a shirt.
