أُودِّعُ في فاس أعزَّ عشيرَةٍ

أُودِّعُ في فاس أعزَّ عشيرَةٍ

ولي عندهُم في الشَّوقِ مالَهُمُ عِندي

ولي عندهُم في الشَّوقِ مالَهُمُ عِندي

In Fez, I bid farewell to the dearest of kin.

I bid farewell in Fez to a most beloved clan,

And they bear the same longing for me that I bear for them.

Yet my longing for them equals their longing for me.

ولمَّا أبَى قلبِي فِراقا نَويتُه

ولمَّا أبَى قلبِي فِراقا نَويتُه

ومَا لِىَ من بدٍّ ومالَه من بُد

ومَا لِىَ من بدٍّ ومالَه من بُد

And when my heart refused the parting I had intended,

When my heart refused to bear our parting,

And neither I nor it had any choice,

I had no choice, nor had they any choice.

رَحلتُ وخلفَّتُ الفؤادَ لَديهِمُ

رَحلتُ وخلفَّتُ الفؤادَ لَديهِمُ

فرَعياً لِقلبي مثلَ رعيكُم عَهدِي

فرَعياً لِقلبي مثلَ رعيكُم عَهدِي

I departed and left my heart behind with them.

I departed leaving my heart behind with them

So care for my heart as you keep faith with me.

To tend to my heart as you tended my pact.

فَما أنا في فاسٍ وإِني نَزيلُها

فَما أنا في فاسٍ وإِني نَزيلُها

فلِله ما يُخفِي ولله ما يُبدِي

فلِله ما يُخفِي ولله ما يُبدِي

So I am not in Fez, yet I am its guest.

So I'm not in Fez, though lodged within her walls.

So to God belongs what it conceals, and to God what it reveals.

To God what's hid and God what's revealed.
