فإنso if كانit is ذَاthis ياO موتُDeath لاdo not تَتَأخَّراdelay
I sense that he has grown a little distant from me.
If that is so, O Death, do not delay.
فليستfor it is not حَياتيmy life بعدَafter ذاthis بجَليلَةٍof great worth
وأيُّand what حياةِlife ليfor me وعيشيand my life تَكَدَّراhas grown troubled
For my life after this is of no great worth.
And what life have I, when my life has grown troubled?
أَإِشراقةٌa radiance? منfrom وجهِthe face of مولايَmy lord بُدِّلتwas replaced
بإعراضِهby his turning away ياO ليتَif only شِعريَmy knowledge ماwhat جرَىhappened
Has the radiance of my lord's face been replaced
By his turning away? If only I knew what happened!
أقُولُI say لنَفسيto myself ذاكَthat منكَfrom you تَوَهُّمٌan illusion
فتَهمِسُthen it whispers ليto me ماwhat بالُهhis condition قدindeed تَكَدَّراhe has grown troubled
I tell myself, 'That is an illusion of your own.'
Then it whispers to me, 'Why has he grown troubled?'
ومولايَand my lord إنif تُشرِقshines بوَجههِupon his face بَسمَةٌa smile
تَعُمُّit encompasses الورىhumankind طُرًّاentirely فَتَبتَسِمُand so smiles الورَىhumankind
And my lord—if a smile shines upon his face,
It spreads to all humankind, and humankind smiles.
إذاif كانit is مِنfrom واشٍa slanderer فليسَتthen it does not تهمُّنِيconcern me
مَقالةُthe words of واشٍa slanderer فالحَقيقةُfor the truth قدmay تُرىbe seen
If it comes from a slanderer, I am not troubled
By a slanderer's words, for the truth may be seen.
وإنand if منfrom ملالَةٍweariness فأمريthen my affair إلىto الذيthe one who
يَرُدُّturns مَلالَthe weariness of القلبِthe heart حُباlove مُبَررَاwell-founded
And if it stems from weariness, my affair rests with the one who
Turns the heart's weariness into well-founded love.
وإنand if كانit is منيfrom me ذاكَthat مَحضُsheer تَوَهُّمٍillusion

فبينَthen between يَدىthe two hands of مولايَmy lord أجثوI kneel لِتَعذِراso you may pardon
And if that is nothing but an illusion of mine,
Then before my lord I kneel, that you may pardon me.
فذلكfor that منfrom حِرصيmy concern الشَّديدِintense علىfor الوَلاloyalty
ومنand from فرطٍِthe excess of إخلاصيmy sincerity إلىuntil حينthe time when أُقبَراI am buried
For that springs from my intense concern for loyalty,
And from my utmost sincerity, until the hour I am buried.
