I imprisoned myself with my own hand,

Without any sentence passed against me.

I remained behind the door in

The darkness of a pitch-black night,

Who, to me, is all I long for.

How many footfalls I took to be

    Footsteps that tormented my heart!

Then my heart leaps, and I strain

    My ear to listen.

    Their sound may fade away,

    And despair returns to me.

    أجلُس فوقَ مَقعَدِي

    Then I return once more;

    I sit upon my chair,

    Upright in my stance,

Placing my hand on the door.

    And thus I spent those

    Two hours, my brother.

And whenever I said to my

Heart, 'Despair is one of my two comforts,'

Is the trait of the noble, generous man.'

    It says, 'Be patient; perhaps

The faithful one will fulfill his promise.'

    And when it saw what

    It saw—what had befallen me—

    It addressed me, saying:

'This one's conscience is not alive.

So leave him, and leave his memory behind,

For you are nothing to him.'
