وطَرفيand my gaze فيamong نَفائِسِهاits treasures أجَلتُI let roam
I alighted at the library of Ibn Zaydan.
And I let my gaze roam among its treasures.
فخامَرَنيthen stole over me سرورٌjoy وابتهاجٌand delight
وإعجابٌand admiration بهاfor it حتىuntil ذَهِلتُI was spellbound
Then joy and delight stole over me,
And admiration for it, until I was spellbound.
وصَلتُI reached بهاthrough it إلىto أمَلٍa hope كبيرٍgreat
ولولاهاand were it not for it إليهto it ماnot وصَلتُI would have reached
Through it I realized a great hope,
And without it I would not have attained it.
فآماليfor my hopes أرىI see آثارَtraces of مَجدٍglory
لِقَوميof my people إذsince بمجدهِمُin their glory شُغِلتُI was engrossed
For I aspire to see traces of glory
Of my people, for their glory has engrossed me.
ظفِرتُI found بهاin it بِيَنبوعِa spring of زُلالٍlimpid water
بِمَورِدِهat its source نَهلتُI drank a first draught كماjust as عَللتُI drank again
In it I found a spring of limpid water,
At its source I drank, then drank again.
وأبصرتُand I beheld العجائِبَthe wonders ناطقاتٍspeaking
بِعَجزيof my inability إنif وصَفتُI described فماso not فَعلتُI did so
And I beheld wonders proclaiming
My inadequacy, should I describe them—so I did not.
ولاand no عَجبٌwonder فصاحِبُهاfor its owner المُفَدَّىthe cherished one
فَريدُpeerless العَصرِof the age إنif عَنهabout him سُئِلتُI am asked
And no wonder, for its cherished owner
Is peerless in his age, if I am asked about him.
وبحرٌand an ocean زاخرٌbrimming بالعِلمwith knowledge حيناًat times
وحيناًand at times بالنَّوالِwith bounty ومنهُand from him نِلتُI received
And an ocean, at times brimming with knowledge,
And at times with bounty, which I received from him.
وخُلقٌand a character فاوحَrivaled الأزهارَthe flowers نَشراًin fragrance
جُعِلتُmay I be made فِداهُhis ransom مِنof such a خُلُقٍcharacter جُعِلتُmay I be made
And a character that rivaled flowers in fragrance—
May I be his ransom—what a character!—may I be!
نَعِمتُI delighted بِقُربشهin his company (text unclear) زمناًfor a time طويلاًlong
فكيفَso how أكونُshall I be إنif عنهfrom him ارتَحلتُI depart
For a long time I delighted in his company;
So how shall I fare if I depart from him?
سَأذهبُI shall go مُرغَماًcompelled عنهfrom him صباحاًin the morning
وفيand in سفريmy journey علىupon اللهِGod اتَّكَلتُI have relied
I shall leave him against my will in the morning,
And on my journey I have put my trust in God.
