فهوfor he ظبىٌa gazelle وَالظَّبيُand the gazelle طبعاby nature شرودُskittish
Do not blame him if he shows some aloofness;
Do not blame him if he shows aversion;
for he is a gazelle, and gazelles are skittish by nature.
For he is a gazelle, and a gazelle is skittish by nature.
قدindeed قضَىdecreed اللهُGod فيin الهوَىlove ماwhat قَضاهُHe decreed it
فَشِقيٌّso one is wretched فيin حُبِّهhis love وسَعيدُand another happy
God has ordained in love whatever He has ordained:
God has decreed in love what He has decreed:
thus one is wretched in loving him, and another blessed.
So one is wretched in his love, another happy.

لَهGod (completing the split word) شَقائيmy misery فيin كلِّevery يَومٍday يزيدُincreases
And I am the one who taught him—praise be to God—
And I am as you know me—and praise be to
for his sake my misery grows with every day.
God—my misery increases every day.
وأناand I ماwhenever صَفَاwas serene لِىَfor me الدهرُtime; life يَوماfor a day

And whenever fortune smiles on me, even for a day,
And whenever life has given me a day of calm,
thunderclaps follow its lovely calm.
Thunderclaps have followed its lovely serenity.
وأبوand Abu حَامدٍHamid ولَولاهand were it not for him أغرَىincited
بيagainst me غَزالِيmy gazelle لَتَمَّwould have been fulfilled لِيfor me ماwhat أُريدI desire
And Abu Hamid—were it not for him, more enamored
And Abu Hamid—had he not incited
of me would be my gazelle, and all I desire would be fulfilled.
My gazelle against me, my wish would have come true.
ليسَit is not عُجباًa wonder إذاif يَغَارُis jealous قَريبٌsomeone close
إنماonly العُجبُthe wonder أنthat يَغَارَshould be jealous البَعيدُsomeone distant
It is no wonder when one close to me grows jealous;
It is no wonder if someone close is jealous;
the wonder is that the distant one should grow jealous.
The wonder is that someone distant should be jealous.

O my loving friend, by God, tell me:
O my affectionate friend, by God, tell me:
Is this how a loving friend behaves?
Is this how an affectionate friend behaves?
