For my life, we made the pilgrimage twice an obligatory duty
and seeing this countenance was the other pilgrimage.
And to see your radiant aspect is the final pilgrimage

At the edges of Najd and among all the tribes,
So their rightful due was for them to inhabit the grave
and the conquest of the Hijaz was the greatest sign.
On the outskirts of Najd and all the tribes
تَقاسَمتَهاyou divided it بعدَafter اللِّقاءِthe encounter غَنيمةٌas spoils
فمِنso one مُجتَنٍreaping نَصراًvictory ومِنand another مُجتَنٍreaping كَسراdefeat
You divided it as spoils after the encounter:
And the opening of Hejaz - that was the greatest sign
one reaping victory and another reaping defeat.
You divided its spoils after the encounter
فمنso from جُثتِthe bodies of القتلىthe slain أسَرتَهمyou captured them كَماjust as

From the bodies of the slain you took them captive, just as
To some victory's share, and to some defeat's share
you passed among them wine from the cups of death.
So just as you made the slain their captives
كأنَّas though رِكاباًmounts (unclear here) فُتِّحتwere opened فيin جُفونِهمtheir eyelids

As though mounts had been opened in their eyelids,
You made them drink from cups of destruction wine
to quench what blazes within the breast.
As if saddled steeds were cleaved into their eyelids
وفُزتَand you won بِنَصرٍa victory حينwhen لمnot يَنجُescaped منهمُof them

And you won victory, when none of them escaped
To extinguish the burning embers in their chests
save those who fled on two legs with what life remained.
And you won victory - none survived but those

لِينصرَهُto support it نصراًwith victory وينشُرَهand spread it نَشراwidely
How great the gulf between one who fights for Muhammad's faith,
Who fled on their legs from the fray
to give it victory and spread it far and wide,
Between one who fights for Muhammad's religion
وبينand between الذيthe one who يَغزوfights ويُجهِدُand exerts نفسَهhimself

and one who fights and exerts himself
To aid it, spreading it far and wide
to sate his pleasures and delight in remembrance.
And one who fights and exerts himself

وذلكand that one عُمرُthe lifespan of الدَّهرِtime أضحىbecame لهfor him عُمراa lifespan
For this one, by my life, is dead before his death,
Only to satisfy his pleasures and enjoy reminiscing
while for that one, the lifespan of time has become his own.
By my life, the latter is dead before his death

وماand not الموتُdeath إلاexcept جَهلُهhis ignorance of ذلكَthat السِّرَّاsecret
A man's life lies in grasping his life's secret,
While the former lives forevermore
and death is only his ignorance of that secret.
A young man's life is perceiving the secret of his life

وأعوزَهُand he lacks للدِّينِfor the faith نَشرٌpropagation فلاthen no خَيراgood
If a king does not uphold the rites of his faith,
Death is nothing but ignorance of that mystery
and cannot spread that faith, there is no good in him.
If a king neglects his religion's rites

So endure against your foes: a glance from you lays them low,
And lacks spreading it, then no good
giving them poison to drink and scorching them with embers.
Let blood water their eyes with a glance from you
ولاand do not تُغمِدِsheathe السيفَthe sword الطَّويلَlong نِجادهُits baldric

And do not sheathe the sword whose baldric is long,
Give them poison to drink and burning embers to pray on
for no salve but it can dispel harm.
Do not sheathe the long, noble sword

And remain radiant, bright of countenance—when there appears
Nothing else will drive away harm like it
the darkness of dire calamities, shine forth as dawn.
It shone white when first unsheathed

And a safety that shelters the ewe from a gray wolf's malice,
If the darkness of gloomy tribulations appears at dawn
and guards the gazelle in rugged country from a lion's thicket.
And safety that protects sheep from wicked foxes

You began, a fresh-faced youth, not yet twenty years old,
And wretched wolves that ambush the lost antelope
and by fifty completed your great deeds.
You began in Turaif shy of twenty

And faith still hopes for its expansion through you,
And completed by fifty your greatest deeds
so may you ever remain, O Abd al-Aziz, its reserve.
Still religion hopes for your extension

The God of the Throne granted you the noblest rank,

and God magnified your standing and your worth.
God has granted you the noblest rank

He bestowed upon you a kingdom beside His Prophet,
And given you from Himself great stature and destiny
and inspired you with success, justice, and goodness.
And inspired you with guidance, justice and righteousness

You ascended it, the throne of thrones—and why not,
You assumed the throne of thrones - how not?
when it has stood beside the grave of the best of God's creation?
For the best of God's creation has neighbored the grave

Through this proximity, grow in joy and gladness,
Through that blessed neighboring, increase in joy and glory
for its dweller, the best of mankind, was gladdened by you.
For its dweller, best of mortals, has been gladdened by you

You have taken what God ordered for His creation
and approached the idols, destroying them by smashing them.
And come to the idols, destroying them

Without you, O he whose sword fortified security
I could not have been in one land and awakened in another.
I would not have been in one land or awakened in another

You were born in the pilgrimage month: a sign's meaning
You were born in the month of Pilgrimage, a sign
pointed to your exaltation, and you exalted that month.
Pointing to you, honoring it as a month

So remain protecting Islam's banner, defending its sanctity
and endure as a back on which the sons of Islam may lean.
And remain for Islam's children if they seek support

Remain stationed around the den, do not sleep
for the enemies still eye it askance.
For enemies still eye it with glittering blades

And from a poet whose verse has never known praise,
What poet who knew not flattery - take his verse
take it, bashful as it is, a virgin maiden.
In its shyness, a virgin ode

The pride of a soul that does not permit a poet
panegyric—yet from me, the praise was thanks.
Praise, but my verses were only thanks

They are only recounting your deeds

You are none but the sun - our eyes recoil
weary whenever we try to look upon it by force.
Dazzled if we attempt to gaze at it directly

Leave them without you, for they have chosen you
as a worthy match, while modesty has offered it an excuse.
As their equal, the bashful showing them excuse
