Your love has possessed my inmost heart,
Your love has seized my inner self
And worn out my heart, and my tears have poured forth.
And made my heart ache as my tears poured down

When I seek sleep, my eyelids forsake me,
When I try to sleep, my eyelids chide me
And say, 'If you sleep, you are no lovesick lover.'
Saying: when you sleep, you're no longer awake
فأُغمِضُso I close جَفنِيmy eyelid عسَانِيperhaps I may أرَىsee

So I close my eyelid, hoping I may see
So I close my eyes hoping to see
Your image, the dearest thing I seek.
Your image, the most precious quest

O my lady, your beauty is the beauty of full moons,
My wish, your beauty is the beauty of full moons
And your glance resembles keen-edged swords.
And your glance narrates the swords of the West

Your face is a moon but to me
Always veiled from my eye.
It's always hidden behind my eyelashes

And your gentleness is the breeze's gentleness when
Your gentleness is the breeze's gentleness
It passes and blows over the roses in the garden.
When it blows over the flowers in the garden

Your words work upon my heart's core
Your words do to my mind
As a sharp sword does when it strikes.
What swords do when they strike

And whenever your name is mentioned,
And your name - whenever it crosses my mind
My body is electrified, and my heart trembles.
My body trembles and my heart pounds

In you is beauty, charm, perfection and grace
And in you is perfection, and in you is refinement.
My wish, my yearning, my darling
أياO مُنيتِيmy desire أياO بُغيَتِيmy sought-for one
ياO مُقلتِيmy eye ارحَمِيhave mercy مَنthe one who أحَبloved
O my desire, O my sought-for one,
Have mercy on one who loves
O my eye, have mercy on the one who loves.
My wish, without you I cannot endure
أمولاتيO my lady بُعدُكِyour distance لستُI am not أطِيI can bear… (partial word)
قُه…it (word ending) قُوليsay باللهby God هلis there مِنany سَببreason
O my lady, your distance I cannot
Please for God's sake, tell me why
Bear; tell me, by God, is there a reason?
If only you knew my inner torment
فلَوfor if كنتِyou were تَدرينَyou knew ماwhat بالحَشاin the inmost heart
لكانthen would be فُؤادُكِyour heart عندِيtoward me انجَذّبdrawn
For if you knew what lies in my inmost heart,
Your heart would long for me
Your heart would be drawn to me.
God has written what flows through me
لقدindeed كتَبwrote اللهُGod مالِيwhat [happened] to me جرَىbefell
وإِنيand I am لَرَاضٍtruly content بمَاwith what قدhas كَتَبHe written
God has indeed written what has befallen me,
And I'm content with all He decreed
And I am truly content with what He has written.
He willed and so His will transpired
وشاءand He willed وشاءتand willed إرادَتُهُHis will
اعيشُI live حليفَa companion of الهوىَpassion والنَّصَبand weariness
And He willed, and His will ordained
That I live, passion's confidante
That I live a companion of passion and weariness.
So my Lord, if You willed I bear
فياso, O ربِّmy Lord إنif كنتَYou had قدَّرتYou decreed أنthat
تَرىYou see كُرَبَتِيmy anguish فوقabove كلِّall الكُرَبanguish
So, my Lord, if You have decreed that
Every agony above all agony
You should see my anguish above all anguish,
Grant me a strong and patient heart
فهَبthen grant لِيَto me قَلباa heart قوياstrong صَبُوراpatient
علَىthrough الهجرِestrangement والبُعدِand distance مهماhowever much اكتَأبit became dejected
Then grant me a strong, patient heart,
To endure the separation and distance no matter how depressed I become
Through estrangement and distance, however grieved it grows;
And eyes that stay awake through the night
وطَرفاand an eye إذاwhen بَاتspent the night بِيwith me سَاهِراawake
إلَىuntil أنthat يَرىit sees الضَّوءthe light نامَit slept وغَبand withdrew
And an eye that, when it stays awake with me all night
Until they see the light disappear and fade away
Till it sees the light, then sleeps and retires;
And if they spill tears till dawn
وإنand if باتَspent the night يسكُبُit pours منof دمعِهits tears
إلَىuntil الفجرِdawn يَكفِيهِsuffices it ماwhat قدhas سَكَبit shed
And if it spends the night pouring out its tears
What they poured is enough, they need not shed more
Till dawn, may what it has shed suffice it;
And thoughts that fly me through space
وفِكراand a mind إذاwhen طَارflew بِيwith me فيin الفَضَاopen space
وعَادand returned يَعِيis aware of ماwhat رَأىit saw ورَقَبand observed
And a mind that, when it soars with me through space,
Then return aware of all they saw and pursued
Returns aware of what it saw and observed;
And a heart that lingers in the solace
وقَلباand a heart إذاif ماfor emphasis تَردَّدhesitated فِيabout
سُلُوِّforgetting الحبِيبthe beloved قضَىfulfilled ماwhat وَجَبwas required
And a heart that, if it hesitates about
Of the beloved, fulfilling all that is due
Forgetting the beloved, does what it must.
And I know my heart lies when it says
وأعرِفُand I know قلبِيmy heart إذاwhen قالit said ليto me
سَيسلُوكَit will forget you ياO مُنيِتيmy desire قدindeed كَذَبlied
And I know that my heart, when it tells me
You will console me, my wish, that's a lie
It will forget you, O my desire, has lied.
So when I die, do not wonder
لذاكَtherefore إذاif مِتُّI die لاdo not تَعجَبِيbe surprised
نعَمyes إِنif أناI عِشتُI live فَاقضِيthen exhaust العَجَبwonder
So if I die, do not be surprised;
Yes, if I live, wonder and marvel!
Yes—if I live, then marvel to your heart's content.
For so has God decreed what He decreed
كذاthus قدhas قَضَىdecreed اللهGod ماwhat قدhas قَضَىHe decreed
فأهلاًso welcome بِماto what قدhas قَضَىHe decreed وكَتَبand wrote
Thus God has decreed what He has decreed,
Welcome what He decreed and ordained
So I welcome what He has decreed and written.
