Amassou, mention of you passes through a gathering
Yesterday they came and memories of you passed like
like a putrid carcass that kills with its odors.
A rotten corpse with odors that could kill
أمسُّوAmassou وقدand indeed أُخبِرتُI was told أنكَthat you are عادِلٌjust
نعمyes عنfrom طريقِthe path of الرُّشدِright guidance والخَيرِand goodness تَعدِلُyou turn away
Amassou, I have indeed been told that you are just;
Yesterday they said you were just and fair
yes—you turn away from the path of right guidance and goodness.
Yes, on the path of righteousness and good you tread
أمَسُّوAmassou عقوقُdisobedience to الوالدينِboth parents كَبيرةٌa grave sin
وعنهand about it أمامَin time to come لاno بُدَّescape تُسأَلُyou will be questioned
Amassou, disobedience to one's parents is a grave sin;
Yesterday, to disobey one's parents is a grave sin
and about it, in time to come, you will surely be questioned.
Of which you will surely be questioned in the end
وماand what ذنبُfault أمٍّa mother قدalready تركتَyou have abandoned بُرورَهاdutiful kindness toward her
أتَترُكهاdo you leave her? لَهفىgrief-stricken ولِلجارِand at the neighbor's تَأكُلُyou eat
And what wrong has a mother done, that you have forsaken kindness toward her?
What fault has a mother whose kindness you abandoned
Do you leave her grief-stricken while you eat at the neighbor's?
Leaving her longing as you feast with neighbors instead?
لقدindeed شهِدَtestified الجيرانُthe neighbors فيكَconcerning you بِضَربِهاto your beating her
وهذاand this أبوكَyour father فيin الشَّهادَةِtestimony أوَّلُfirst
The neighbors have indeed testified that you beat her,
The neighbors witnessed as you struck and beat her
and here is your father, first to bear witness.
And your father leads them all as witness to this deed
أتُنكِرُهdo you deny him? إِذbecause أنَّthat طَرفَهُhis eye سالِمٌsound
وطرفُكَand your eye منfrom فرطِexcess التَّلفَّتِlooking around أحوَلُcross-eyed
Do you deny him because his eye is sound,
Will you deny when his eyes see truly
while yours is cross-eyed from looking around too much?
While yours are twisted from excessive drink and greed?
وماand what ذنبُfault أشياخٍelders جلستَyou sat أمامهمbefore them
تَسُبُّهمُyou revile them سَبًّاwith abuse وباللَّعنِand with curses تُكمِلُyou finish
And what wrong have the elders done, before whom you sat,
What fault have elders before whom you sat
reviling them roundly and finishing with curses?
Insulting them, cursing their names with relish?
