All this for fear of poverty—yet

God has decreed that he shall become poor.

So ask the walls, when his name was hung

upon them, how they nearly fell.

Do not fear a sale, for whoever reads

your ill-omened name upon them will flee at once.

Time raged against him in fury,

and he crumbled like a fence-builder's dry twigs.

Do not let his appearance deceive you:

indeed, by God, he is like a rotten bone.

I would never have lampooned you—and who

would, in lampooning you, lampoon his own rich, fresh verse?

But I have sins in great number,

and how many a sin has been forgiven by speaking the truth!

    من تَلا منها ولو بيتاً أُجِر

    So I drew near to God through this poem;

whoever recites even one couplet of it is rewarded.
