ضَمَّناbrought us together مَجلِسٌa gathering يُنَادِيكَcalls you أَقبِلcome
ضَمَّنا مَجلِسٌ يُنَادِيكَ أَقبِل
لَمdid not يَطِبbecome pleasant أُنسُنَاour fellowship إذَاwhen غِبتَyou were absent عَنَّاfrom us
لَم يَطِب أُنسُنَا إذَا غِبتَ عَنَّا
A gathering brought us together, calling to you: “Come!”
Our fellowship held no joy when you were away from us.
يَاO تُرىone wonders هَلwhether نَرَاكَwe see you تَأتِيyou come سَرِيعاswiftly
يَا تُرى هَل نَرَاكَ تَأتِي سَرِيعا
وَتُرىand you see حَيثwhere لَمnot تَكُنyou were كَيفَhow كُنَّاwe were
وَتُرى حَيث لَم تَكُن كَيفَ كُنَّا
I wonder, will we see you coming swiftly,
And will you see how we were in your absence?
نَتَهَادىwe give one another مِنَof الصَّفاءِpure affection كُؤُوساًcups
نَتَهَادى مِنَ الصَّفاءِ كُؤُوساً
وَحَدِيثاًand conversation يَروقُdelights لَفظاًin wording وَمَعنىand in meaning
وَحَدِيثاً يَروقُ لَفظاً وَمَعنى
We offer one another cups of pure affection,
And conversation pleasing in wording and meaning.
هَاhere أنَاI أَناI أتَيتُI have come بِقَلبٍwith a heart
هَا أنَا أَنا أتَيتُ بِقَلبٍ
طَارَflew بِيwith me نَحوَtoward مِنthe one بِهfor him القَلبُthe heart جُنَاwent mad
طَارَ بِي نَحوَ مِن بِه القَلبُ جُنَا
Here I am—I have come with a heart
That flew me toward the one for whom my heart went mad.
عَلِمَknows اللهُGod أنthat جَميعَall رِفَاقيmy companions
عَلِمَ اللهُ أن جَميعَ رِفَاقي
هوit لِلقَلبِfor the heart كلُّall مَاthat which يتَمَنَّىit desires
هو لِلقَلبِ كلُّ مَا يتَمَنَّى
God knows that all my companions
Are, to my heart, all that it desires.
