A beloved whom beauty has commanded us to love.

O sunlike body, with a moonlike face above it!

O pearl fashioned in human form!

O delight of the eye, and O light of sight!

How can I endure my love for you? My patience is lost.

O gazelle, grazing within my heart!

Who is it that made killing me lawful?

    You let a tress of yours fall over your neck;

Through it, the lovers were struck down.

They cannot tell Khalid from Amr.

O you who surpass the full moon in perfection!

Do you incline toward love as I do?

O beloved, what have I but you?

If I spent my wealth on you,

A glance at you would turn my poverty to riches.

    Beauty is a thing without equal;

And everything that possesses it is beautiful.

And the soul is always drawn to it,

And the mighty are humbled before it,

Bound captive to its prohibitions and commands.

    A beloved of lovely disposition,

    Beautiful in character and bearing,

And a delight to eyes and ears.

She whom my pen has grown weary describing,

And whose beauty has bewildered my mind.

For the sake of the love within my soul,

And the torments of lovesickness within my heart,

Grant union to the one whom long separation has harmed,

And who has never found a cure for his illness,

    Except reunion with smiling lips.
