    Your coldness has lasted long in the arena of rejection.

    There is only my soul—take it as your ransom.

    I ask God, if I die of longing

    in my love for you, to prolong your lives.

    ما عَرفتُ الهَوانَ لَولا هَواكُم

    Before love, I was honored and noble;

    I would not have known humiliation but for loving you.

    My masters, I have long angered my reproachers

    only in eager hope of your approval.

    Those who turn away from me seek coldness.

    How bitter coldness is, and how sweet you are!

    نِ تُراني أَحيا لِيومِ لِقاكُم

    Long has the span of separation stretched between me and you;

    do you think I shall live to see the day we meet?

    You are the opposite of me—how

    poor I am in my need of you, and how rich you are!

    أَحسنَ اللهُ في اصطباري عَزاكُم

    Do not entrust my heart to the strength of my patience;

    may God console you for the loss of my endurance.
