    حَدِّث إذا حَدَّثتَ عَن سُكانِهِ

    You told of al-Aqiq’s laurels and its moringa trees;

when you tell, tell of its inhabitants.

Halt the mounts; perhaps we may be healed by what

has wafted from them, from the soil of its native lands.

O you wearing the breeze’s robes from the sanctuary,

and anointed with perfume from its dunes,

and embracing the east wind’s breath from its spreading trees,

and veiled in the fragrance of the earth beneath its buttercups,

and telling a tale supported by a chain of transmission,

from that milk-seller, from his neighbors:

Hail to you, a night traveler who whispers his tale,

while the fragrance of wild lote trees wafts from his sleeves.

You revived every dead, love-stricken lover among us,

and restored his spirit to his body.

And you conveyed a message from the people of the dune,

and I see the breeze spreading it with its tongue.

And it says they remain as you thought them,

since the sanctuary’s days of old.
