You reproached me, thinking reproach would help,

yet in my passion I have a witness none can refute.

Then wrong me or grant me refuge—reproach will never make me desist.

And speak or pardon me—never shall I heed rebuke.

Shall I be at ease, free of agonizing longing,

when the company bidding farewell has hastened to depart?

I think separation, like me, has loved my loved ones,

for each has from it a cloud and a face-veil.

And among my griefs after Asma are dwelling-sites,

deserted, their summer and spring quarters effaced.

I stood there, watering the earth from my eyes,

with clouds that never ceased shedding tears.

I console myself by weeping over the beloved's haunts,

yet what burning thirst can such consolation relieve?

When the women who chide me ask what has happened,

I say, abased, 'Tears have flowed upon my cheeks.'
