مَتَىwhen يَشفَىis healed بِوَصلِكُمby union with you العَليلُthe ailing one
وَيَبرَىand recovers مِنfrom جَوَىburning anguish الحُبِّlove الغَليلُthe parched one
When will the ailing one be healed by union with you,
When will your reunion heal the ailing one,
And the parched one recover from love's burning anguish?
And he recover from love's painful fever?
أَجيرانَO neighbors الحِمَىthe sanctuary هَلis there ليfor me إِلَيكُمto you
عَلَىagainst رَغمِthe will of العِدىthe foes يَوماًone day سَبيلُa path
O neighbors of the sanctuary, might I reach you
O you who bar the fever, will I ever
By some path one day, despite the foes?
Find my way to you, despite the hatred?
لَئِنeven if نَزَحَتwent far away بِكُمwith you عَنَّاfrom us اللَّياليthe nights
فَأَنتُمyet you فيin حِمَىthe sanctuary of قَلبِيmy heart نُزولُdwellers
Even if the nights have carried you far from us,
If nights have marched off thanks to you,
Yet you dwell in the sanctuary of my heart.
You dwell still in the fever of my heart.
أَياO بانَban tree الحِمَىthe sanctuary قُلtell ليme أَهَلis there ليfor me
وَقَدand already بانُواthey have departed إِلىto وَصلٍreunion وُصُولًُaccess
O ban tree of the sanctuary, tell me: is there for me,
O people of the camp, tell me, am I fit
Though they have departed, any way to reach reunion?
For reunion, now they have come to meet?
يُحَدِّثُنيspeaks to me بُرَيقُa little lightning-flash الشِّعبِthe ravine عَنكُمof you
حَديثَa tale of هَوىًlove بِهِin it دَمعيmy tears رَسُولُa messenger
The ravine's glimmer of lightning speaks to me of you,
The scent of the bramble tells me of you,
A tale of love, with my tears as its messenger.
Tearfully, like a messenger of love.
وأشتاقُand I yearn for الصبَّاthe east wind وَهناًlate at night إذاwhen ماemphatic particle
سَرىtraveled by night فِيin طَيِّهاits folds مِنكُمfrom you قَبولُan easterly breeze
And I yearn for the east wind late at night, whenever
I yearn for the morning breeze, when it bears
An easterly breeze from you drifts within its folds.
From you a fragrance to stir my soul.
فَإِنand if هَبَّblows النَّسيمُthe breeze إِلَيَّtoward me مِنكُمfrom you
فإنِّيthen I كالنَّسيمِlike the breeze بِكُمbecause of you عَليلُailing
And if the breeze blows toward me from you,
If the breeze blows your scent here to me,
Then, like the breeze, I am faint with longing for you.
I'm like the breeze, sick with love of you.
وَليand I have فيin حُبِّكُمlove for you وَجدٌpassion قَديمٌlongstanding
حَديثُan account of قَصيرِهُits brief part فِيكُمconcerning you يَطُولُgrows long
And in my love for you I bear a longstanding passion,
For you I have an old, abiding love
Even a brief account of it grows long when it concerns you.
Whose briefest tale of you is very long.
وَليand I have فيin قُرِبكُمyour nearness نَشرٌresurrection وَلكنand yet
مَتَىwhenever بِنتُمyou depart فَمَاthen not صَبريmy patience جَميلُgraceful
And in your nearness I am brought back to life; yet
And I have, in your nearness, joy - but when
Whenever you depart, my patience is anything but graceful.
Will you be near? My patience is not fair.
