What ails my heart, that it flutters when I remember you,

while tears pour and gush from my eye?

And when I see you, my tongue is restrained

by speechlessness; my desire speaks through tears.

It is only because my heart is bound

in captivity by you, while my tears are set free.

No wonder the heart flutters, for it is

hung upon the flank of that branchlike form.

And in my lifeblood is a branch whose flank forms

a spear, bearing a banner of his forelock.

He has come to dwell in my heart, and his sash

ever sways and shifts, like his two bracelets.

So his flank is garlanded with hearts,

and his waist is girdled with the eyes’ pupils.

From him the breeze has drifted; all around him

a fragrance wafts from the passing breeze and scents the air.

    فَلَسوفَ يأَتيكَ الخَيالُ وَيَطرُقُ

    He said, “Await a visit from his dream-phantom;

for the apparition will surely come to you and visit by night.”

What have I to do with the night-visiting gaze? Rather,

my passion is for him, and him I love and adore.
