Were it not for infatuation with his gaze and its kohl,

and with the slender taper of his waist and its leanness,

in pride, nor would his eyelid brandish its polished blade.

without his fearing vengeance for his victim!

The marvel is not that he, an oryx calf from a herd,

slays al-Sharā’s lion in its thicket,

but that my wasted body has come seeking

a cure for itself from his eyelid, ailing though it is.

Why does my passion for him keep growing in abundance,

while I seek refuge in patience that is anything but gracious?

I deem catching the stars easier than reaching his bridal curtains

with my gaze; how, then, could I call it easier than reaching his anklets?

my tears upon my cheek is ransom for your smooth cheek.

the honeyed sweetness held within your mouth.

restless of heart, when you are his utmost wish.

are to him as his reprover’s words are to his ears.

You have set love’s clinging passion upon me; tomorrow one will see

my body, like your waist, forever slender.

And I have become distraught with longing, my heart in a blaze,

settled there before its departure draws near.

    فأَجبتُهُ ونهضتُ في تَحصيِلهِ

    O my companion, the herald of wealth has called to me;

so I answered him and rose to attain it.

I have—while the dullard contents himself with a town,

where he settles for nothing but his own obscurity—

ambitions that part my eyelid from sleep,

by joining my sturdy camel with its brisk, easy trot.

Leave me with my resolve, night travel, the white camels, and the

    wilderness whose path no one can find;

each a waste with sides alike, its soil [uncertain reading]

dust-covered, making its guide’s heart quake.

How different the east wind, scorching with its hot blast,

seems to me from darkness breathing its cool breeze!

May I not be of Dhuhl ibn Shayban, nor

may pride’s lot-arrows be cast for me among his people,

if I do not pitch my tent in a sanctuary where

misfortunes cannot reach me once I have reached it,

in the pavilion of al-ʿAzīrī al-Ghiyā-

thī’s shade, whose spreading shelter is enough for me.
