Too far away to complain to you of his passion,

A captive of love, whose protection rests in your two palms.

A lover, sorrowful at heart, whose sighing has increased,

And his greeting wafts fragrantly in the folds of the breeze.

He wept the day the valley bend and its doves came into view,

The weeping of a sorrowful, lovesick man whose passion grows.

Knowing that the bān tree spells the scattering of his company,

And that the doves’ songs are his death.

O my two friends, at al-Jarʿāʾ, while the meadow rises high,

And the musk of the moist earth has had its seal broken.
