    فما على هَجرِكَ لي مِن قَرار

    To you I flee from your bitter cruelty;

    For I find no rest while you forsake me.

    Your turning away has loosed for me a raincloud

    Of copious tears upon my cheeks.

    By your cheeks' roses and your dusky lips' musk,

    And the narcissus of your eyes and the myrtle of your cheek-down,

    Do not accuse me of forgetting you, for

    One like me cannot endure parting from one like you.

    The bough resembles you, yet it

    Drops the fruit it bears.

    مِعصمَهُا إلاَّ الهلالَ سِوار

    And a maiden like the sun, who has chosen no

    Bracelet for her wrist but the crescent moon;

    مبسمِ نُوريَّةٍ ما في الخِمار

    Fiery of cheek, radiant of

    Smile, radiant in what lies beneath her veil;

    Houri-like in countenance; in her bosom

    And on her cheek are pomegranates and pomegranate blossoms.

    The stars of al-Jawza in its sky are not

    More remote to visitors than she is when she gazes.

    Her hair is night above the dawn

    Of her face; beneath her wrap is a bough.

    Like the sun, were it not veiled in darkness,

    And the gazelle, were it not known for fleeing.

    Her front teeth said to her lovers:

    "The only precious gems are the small ones."

    I marvel how hard they strive in her defense—

    The lids of her eyes, though they droop in defeat.
