The dwellers of al-ʿUdhayb and Wābil do not have

what my heart holds of burning grief and turmoil.

O lightning of Rāma, if you pass over the sanctuary,

greet al-ʿUdhayb and whoever dwells there.

And when you brandish above the small band of Arabs at the bend

a sword, I weep for them with streaming tears.

O my neighbors at the curving sands of Zarūd, shall we

ever return to the foot of Burqat ʿĀqil?

My heart flew with the breeze toward you,

and alighted on the sanctuary’s swaying bān trees.

It sought the breezes’ sympathy, thinking they

came from you; so it settled there, never to depart.

And when my eye glimpsed your lightning, it wept

for that ill-used time, with a downpour of tears.

And I have indeed been smitten with love for the sanctuary’s dwellers,

a passion that has lodged in my bones and joints.
