وحذارِ ثُمَّ حذارِ أعيُنَ عينهِ
That is their dwelling; stand in its midst.
That is their singer, so stop in his midst
And beware—beware again—the eyes of its wide-eyed gazelles.
And beware, then beware, the eyes of his eyes

Do not be deceived by the languor of the oryxes' eyes,
Do not be fooled by the languor of his sleepy eyes
for their languor is a plunge into death before one reaches him.
For their languor is the seduction of temptation without him

لرشاً وثِقتُ بعهدهِ ويمينهِ
And to the right of the tents is a familiar haunt,
And on the right, from the polo grounds, a promise
for a gazelle-fawn whose pledge and oath I trusted.
I trusted his promise and his oath

جسمي الضَّعيفُ بخصرهِ وجُفونهِ
The dark-lipped one's waist truthfully recounts the sickness
The belt of beauty quenches my thirst with health
of my frail body, caused by his waist and eyelids.
My weak body with his belt and his eyelids

لكن هُديتُ بثغرهِ وجبينهِ
A moon—his beauty spot and hair led me astray,
A moon I went astray with his mole and his hair
but his mouth and forehead guided me.
But I was guided by his mouth and his forehead

The moons of night take fright at his light,
The moons of darkness tremble from his light
and the branches on the dunes envy his suppleness.
And the branches of palms are jealous of his softness

I entrusted him with my heart, knowing that I
I entrusted him with my heart and I know
had foolishly entrusted it to an untrustworthy keeper.
I foolishly entrusted him to an untrustworthy keeper

O day he was sent away, I am not the first lover
O day when the sunset is not the first lover
whose secrets the torrents from his tear ducts laid bare.
Whose secrets were revealed by the sunset of his affairs

How many a grudge-filled one is among the camel litters,
How much in suspicions is there of many suspicions
who has not pitied the sorrowful lover and his sorrows,
That did not inherit the youth his passion and his sorrows

set in rows—my soul a ransom for those precious gems.
Substance my soul is a ransom for his preciousness
