فما أَرى الرَّاحَ إِلاَّ من مُحيَّاكِ
Take back the cups that hold your heady wine;
Return the cups that hold your intoxicating fire,
for I see no wine save what comes from your face.
for I see no wine save what comes from your face.

What your two eyes have done is enough—and if
What your eyes have done is enough; and if
you deny it, your cheeks prove my claim.
you deny it, your cheeks have proved my claim.

وَضُرةَ الشمسِ من بالفَتكِ أَفتاكِ
O sister of the dune-gazelle in neck and nape,
O sister of the dune's gazelle in neck and throat,
and rival of the sun—who gave you a fatwa to slay?
and rival of the sun, who gave you leave to slay?

What harm could the clouds’ turning away do your abode, when
The clouds' neglect has not harmed your dwelling, for already
my own cloud-bank has rained upon it from this weeper’s eyes?
a raincloud from my weeping eyelid has poured upon it.

منَ النَّسيمِ لأروي عَنهُ رَيَّاكِ
Were it not for your love, I would never inhale a single waft
Were it not for love of you, I would not have inhaled a waft
of breeze, to tell from it of your fragrance.
of the breeze, to recount your fragrance on its authority.

You were unjustly commissioned to destroy lives—so, O
You were unjustly tasked with destroying souls—so, O
dark-lipped beauty, who appointed you over souls?
dark-lipped one, who appointed you over souls?

I found your love within my heart; how could I see
And I found love of you in my heart; so how could I see
a partner beside it? That is idolatry itself.
a partner for it, when that would be sheer idolatry on my part?

Never, over all that I endure, make a show
Never show, concerning what I endure,
of innocence—for I am one among your slain.
any disavowal, for I am one of your slain.
