ماليI have no انتفاعٌbenefit بالخَيالِfrom the phantom إِذاwhen سَرىtravels by night
So long as sleep thus shuns my eyelids,
No matter how sleep eludes these eyelids
I gain nothing from the phantom when it visits by night.
What use is fantasy if it flows away?
لاdo not تُهدِيَنَّsend as a gift إليَّto me طيفاًa phantom طارقاًvisiting by night
ماas long as لمnot أذُقI have tasted للنَّومِof sleep كأساًa cup مُسكراintoxicating
Do not send me a phantom visiting by night
Bring me no phantom visitor in the night
until I have tasted sleep's intoxicating cup.
Unless I've drunk a heady draught of slumber.

إنif كنتَyou are عنabout أهلِthe people of الغَرامِpassionate love مُخَبِّراtelling
Take from my sighs what my ribs dictate,
From my sighs take what saddens my heart
if you are telling of those in love.
If you are the confidant of lovers' pains.

Relate no tale of longing from anyone but me,
Speak not of others, youths and damsels fair,
and heartache—for all game is in the wild ass's belly.
For the hunted game all run within my breast.

ومَحِلَّةًand in abode هاbehold قدindeed بقيتُI have remained كماas تَرىَyou see
O brother of the sun and the gazelle in beauty
Brother of the gazelle and the wild gazelle,
and abode—behold, I remain as you see.
Behold me thus, and see what I have come to.
كمhow long ذاthis التَّبالةُfeigned ignorance (uncertain reading) فيin الهوَىlove عنconcerning حالتيmy condition
دَمعيmy tears يسيلُflow وأنتَwhile you تسألُask ماwhat جرَىhappened
How long this feigned ignorance of my plight in love?
How strange is passion in love's agony!
My tears flow, while you ask what happened.
My tears flow down while you ask what has happened.
وحياةِand by the life of حُبِّكَyour love إنَّindeed قَولَthe claim of عَواذليmy reproachers

لكَto you إِنَّنيthat I am سالٍno longer pining حديثٌa tale مُفتَرىfabricated
And by the life of your love, my reproachers' claim
By your life, my words to the fair ladies
to you—that I no longer pine—is a fabricated tale.
Are for you a fabricated tale, no more.
أبديتَyou revealed شَعركَyour hair فوقَabove وجَهكَyour face ليto me ضُحىًat midmorning
فأَريتَنيso you showed me فيin الحالِthe present moment ليلاًa night مُقمِراmoonlit
You showed me your hair above your face at midmorning,
You showed your hair to me in the morning light,
so at once you showed me a moonlit night.
Displaying sudden darkness in the moonlit night.
وجَعلتَand you made حظِّيmy fortune مِثلَlike خالكَyour beauty mark أسوداًblack
فأَذقتنيso you made me taste موتاًa death كخدِّكlike your cheek أحمَراred
And you made my fortune black, like your beauty mark,
You made my lot as black as your cheek's mole
so you made me taste death, red as your cheek.
And brought me death like your red cheeks' rose.

Part of the proof that your face is Paradise:
Proof that your face is paradise lies in this:
saliva from your dark lips that resembles al-Kawthar.
Your saliva is a water pure as Kauthar.

And you shot me with the arrows of your eye, over which
You shot me with the arrows of your deadly glance,
Harut has already recited his verse.
On which Harut's inscriptions are engraven.

Before the glances of your eye, I had never believed
Not till I saw your eyes was I convinced
that gazelles hunt the lions of al-Shara.
That the wild deer hunt lions on the hill.
صبريmy patience لوصلِكَfor union with you لاno سبيلَway إليهِto it ليfor me
إلاَّexcept إذاwhen التقتِmeet الثُّريَّاthe Pleiades بالثَّرىwith the dust
Patience while awaiting union with you is beyond my reach,
Only when earth meets Pleiades in heaven
unless the Pleiades meet the dust.
Can I attain the bliss to be with you.
