Say to Ghars al-Din, the prince in whom hopes are placed

and whose glory has no equal:

O prince, who on the battlefield has always

    been death to all champions;

O youth, whose two palms, on the day of giving, pour

gifts more abundantly than rain and life-giving showers.

God has distinguished you with noble virtues, so that

all models of excellence have been gathered in you.

    لَهُمُ الَمجدُ والحِجا والَمعالي

    You come from a people noble in their endeavors;

theirs are glory, wisdom, and lofty honors.

He fears no turns of fate who takes

refuge in your sheltered abode, O son of Ghazal.

Your resolve on the day of battle is keener

than the edges of gleaming swords and towering spears.

Yours is a way of generosity in which you stand alone,

with qualities no others can match:

    abundant glory and sound judgment,

    and steadfastness, eminence, and majesty.

The fame of those before you in beneficence has been effaced

by the days of your unceasing generosity.

So take pride in high honors, for you and the one who

granted you your wishes in them are the best of men.

And live on, safe and sound, as long as a collared dove sings

before dawn amid the topmost boughs of wild lote trees.
