Of Ibn Bunayman and his she-mule, I heard
I heard of Ibn Buniyan and his she-mule -
a strange tale I took for one of his poems.
A story I made into one of my poems -
قالواthey said رَمَتهُshe threw him off وداسَتand she trampled بالنِّعالِwith the horseshoes عَلىon
قَفاهُthe back of his neck قُلتُI said لَهُمto them ذاthis منamong عَوائِدهِhis habits
They said, 'She threw him off and trampled with her horseshoes on
They said she kicked him and stamped with her shoe
the back of his neck.' I said to them, 'This is one of his habits,
Upon his nape. I said: That's her custom!
لأَنِّهَاbecause she فَعَلتshe did فيin حَقِّregard to والدِهاher father
ماwhat كانَhe used to يَفعَلُهُdo it فيin حَقِّregard to والدِهِhis father
for she did to her father
For she did to her father what he would do
what he used to do to his father.'
In turn, to his own father!
