O you who make your two eyes into snares,

To forsake my love for you is the height of polytheism.

I cannot tell, when I see you walk with a swaying gait:

is that your upright figure, or an arak branch?

Or have you mirrored the full moon on the night of its fullness,

so that the model marveled at the imitator's worth?

And how often you met my submission with submission,

and how often you smiled while my eyelid wept.

Reproach and punish me with whatever you wish,

except with your bewitching, deadly gaze.

Had you not gone forth fully armed with the weapon of the eye—

the wide one—my tongue would not have become a complainer.

O you who bid me free my heart from a passion

from which I never hoped for freedom as long as time endures:

where can an unabashed lover flee,

felled by the arrows of the Turks' eyes?

My lifeblood be ransom for a mellow-voiced one among them; when he appears,

the moons in the celestial spheres bow down before him.

His mouth puts the richly embroidered garden to shame,

in the morning, with the fragrance of the miswak.
