O rival of the sun, I feel passion for you,

And longing, burning anguish, and love's frenzy.

Before your figure, we had never seen a bough

Upon which a full moon shines.

Each day deepens my longing for you,

Some of which has left minds bewildered.

Aimed toward my heart from bows

    Strung taut—your two eyebrows—were arrows.

And the same sickness lies in my body and in your

    Eyelids, your waist, and love.

Those who said this spoke truly: 'Beautiful women have no

Pledge or bond of honor, wherever they may be.'

    فَلتدَعني مِن عَتبهِا اللُّوَّامُ

    I am content with what my heart endures;

So let the reproachers spare me their censure of her.

What phantom of you could visit me at night,

When my eye has never known what sleep is?

Yours is my last remnant of life, consumed by

Yearning, and an ear through which no reproach has passed.

What business have the reproachers with you and me?

I am lovesick and enamored—and that is all.
