O our neighbors, how can we reach you, now that

your homes grow ever farther from our home?

I yearn for you, with trackless deserts between us,

and the sword of far-flung separation has cleft me through.

And I have a soul whose form longing has altered,

    where tears dissolve, their water now a draught;

and a heart, which the breeze, whenever it blows, fills

with greater passion, has become a blaze from the heat of remembering you.

When the lightning of al-Sham flashes, tears pour down

for you, and my heart neither rests nor grows calm.

And I recall the days of union—if only they

would return, and we would not count their hours,

and the mouth of the flowers would smile at our closeness,

and we would be free of estrangement and rejection for as long as we lived.
