O my lord, Ghars al-Din, O you
O my Master who planted religion, O you
Upon whose face dewy freshness gleams,
Whose light shines on his cheeks

بِمُحكَمهِ فَنَتلوَهُ تِلاَوه
And out of gratitude for his blessings we pray
With thanks for His blessings we pray
With his clear text, which we then recite;
Reciting it perfectly
وياand O منyou who فيهِin him للقُصَّادِfor petitioners لِينٌgentleness

And O you who are gentle toward petitioners,
O you who is gentle with the young
Yet harsh toward whoever goes astray;
And harsh towards those who misguide

And O you, a gathering one sees without you
O you whose gathering, when seen
Is empty, with no charm upon it.
Is free of imperfections

May God keep your good fortune ever rising,
May God make your ascent a success
And may the foe of your glory remain wretched.
And may your enemy of glory remain wretched

على قَلبي بإِفلاسي غِشاوَه
I complain to you, master of masters, that
The Master of Masters doubts that
My pennilessness has laid a veil upon my heart.
My heart is bankrupt

وَعِنَّدي من يُطالِبُ بالحَلاوضه
And here mid-Sha'ban has come upon me,
Mid Sha'ban has come upon me
And someone with me is demanding sweets.
Yet I'm demanded to pay debts
وأُقِسمُand I swear لَيسَthere is not ليfor me فيat النِّصفِmid-month نِصفٌa half (coin)

لأَنِّي والدَّراهِمَ في عَداوَه
And I swear: at mid-month I have not even half a coin,
I swear I have no money at mid-month
For I and the dirhams are at enmity.
For I and money are in enmity

Perhaps your bounty will make me happy; otherwise,
Perhaps your help will bring me fortune, else
I shall flee, a cudgel in my right hand.
I will flee, my right hand gripping a wand
