O lord, within whose cloak and saddle

And seat are rain, a lion, and a moon.

And O vizier, who strengthened the kingdom with counsel

That supported it until it stood firm.

Whoever hears praise of you sees you in it,

And finds firsthand experience of you matching the report.

    يتلو الذي ينشُرهُا منها سُور

    How many noble deeds and virtues of conduct are yours;

Whoever recounts them recites whole chapters from them.

When you rise against calamities, letting fly,

Like polished steel, keen of resolve, praiseworthy in effect,

You drive them back upon their heels,

Retreating, seeing in you what dazzles.

When they turn back in fear of him, asking,

'Where is escape?' he answers, 'No indeed! There is no refuge.'

O lord, whose fingertips have not given me drink,

And from him, a breast whose description cannot be sustained [text unclear].

And noble one, whose character and hand

Are like lightning in its radiance and like rain.

I complain to you of calamities from my time:

Were they to approach the Pleiades' necklace, it would scatter.

Time opposed me, finding me unbowed

To it; so it left no harm untried and spared nothing.

Yet how can he fear all-encompassing poverty

Whose heart embraces these choice verses?

Those who raised my worth have been carried off

By time's calamities and the upheavals of change.

They snatched away kings: I dwelt, through their faces

And their bounty, among full moons and purses of coin.

And left me bereft of a generous, true-hearted man:

If asked, he aided the petitioner; or, if he spoke, he kept his word.

So seize the chance my plight affords, that perhaps

I may take pride in what you bestow upon me.

And win it, for it is a noble deed

By which you preserve your name when Time stumbles.

And claim my rhymes, from whose wine-jar

Comes unmixed wine—not everyone who speaks makes poetry.

Poems I deem too lofty to become

The white stockings of towering glory—rather, its forehead-blazes.

Far-ranging verses, with beauty in their composition

And their description as the choicest pearls.

They endure as long as time within their heaven,

While others last only as flowers last.

Far be it that a benefactor's kindness should go to waste,

Especially with a young man when he gives thanks.
