    في الحِمَى وانتِظارِ يَومِ التَّلاقي

    No—by our days just before parting,

    in the sanctuary, and our waiting for the day of reunion;

    ما لَقِينا من لاعِجِ الأَشواقِ

    and by our evenings at the valley bend, when we lamented

    the searing longings we had endured;

    and by the night at the sandhill, when the caravan was drowsing,

    and we spent the night beneath a canopy of darkness—

    no, I have not ceased loving you, even were I to taste

    every bitter taste of love.

    No, nor have I told one who asks about you,

    “They have afflicted me with anguish and parting.”

    My love for you, like abiding torment, O people of Najd,

    will endure beyond the Day of Reckoning and Presentation.

    And when I yearn for you, you are within my heart,

    guests lodged there in place of longing.

    Wherever you may be, I remain

    in nearness to you and in reunion.

    Thus I have become, in the school of love,

    an imam for the community of lovers.
